Ingénieur au CEA dès 1960, son expertise s’est d'abord forgée sur les réacteurs Pégase (Cadarache) et Célestin (Marcoule). Fort de ces expériences, il devient l'un des piliers du projet RHF dès 1965 sous l’impulsion de Robert Dautray. Il conduisit et suivit les travaux jusqu’à la première divergence du 31 août 1971. Ceux qui l'ont côtoyé se souviendront de son exigence professionnelle, mais aussi de son tempérament festif : le souvenir de la fête mémorable organisée pour célébrer cette première divergence.
En 1989, alors que la rupture d’éléments essentiels du circuit primaire dans le caisson cœur du RHF menaçait de conduire au démantèlement définitif du réacteur, Jean-Paul Martin a puisé dans son expérience acquise à la COGEMA pour proposer une solution de réparation audacieuse. Sous son égide, la refonte totale du bloc réacteur entre 1990 et 1994 a permis au RHF de rediverger en 1995, prolongeant ainsi sa mission scientifique pour plusieurs décennies.

Jean-Paul Martin: ILL's testimony
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Jean-Paul Martin, who passed away on 30 December at the age of 91.
With the passing of Jean-Paul Martin, we have lost one of the founding fathers of the High-Flux Reactor (HFR). Deputy to Jean Chatoux, who was head of the reactor construction project, Jean-Paul Martin was a leading figure at our Institute, leaving an enduring mark on both the creation of the ILL and its continued existence.
Jean-Paul began his career in 1960 as an engineer at the CEA, honing his expertise on the reactors Pégase (Cadarache) and Célestin (Marcoule). Armed with this experience, in 1965 he became one of the cornerstones of the project instigated by Robert Dautray to construct the ILL's High-Flux Reactor, leading and overseeing the work until the reactor achieved first criticality on 31 August 1971. Those who knew Jean-Paul will remember not only his professionalism, but also his fun-loving personality: the party organised to celebrate first criticality of the reactor is forever etched in the annals of the Institute.
In 1989, when the failure of essential components of the primary circuit in the reactor core vessel threatened to lead to the permanent shutdown of the reactor, Jean-Paul drew on his experience at COGEMA to come up with a bold solution. Under his direction, the reactor block underwent a complete overhaul between 1990 and 1994, enabling the reactor to restart in 1995 and extending the scientific life of the ILL by several decades.
A funeral service will be held for Jean-Paul Martin on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, at 10.00 a.m., at Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
